पंडित बिरजू महाराज (वास्तविक नाम- बृजमोहन नाथ मिश्रा) का जन्म 4 फ़रवरी, 1938 को लखनऊ घराने के प्रसिद्ध कथक प्रस्तावक जगन्नाथ महाराज के घराने में हुआ था। बिरजू महाराज भारतीय नृत्य की ‘कथक’ शैली के आचार्य कालका-बिंदादीन घराने के प्रमुख प्रतिपादक और पथ प्रदर्शक थे। बिरजू महाराज ने अपने पिता आछन महाराज से कथक के मूल सिद्धांत की शिक्षा ली और कथक के लिए ‘कलाश्रम’ की स्थापना भी की है।
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से जुड़ा कत्थक नृत्य बिरजू महाराज को विरासत में मिला। उनके पूर्वज ईश्वरी प्रसाद मिश्र इलाहाबाद के हंडिया तहसील के रहने वाले थे और उन्हें कत्थक के पहले ज्ञात शिक्षक के रूप में जाना जाता है। अपने पिता के साथ केवल सात वर्ष की उम्र में ही वह देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में जाकर अपनी प्रस्तुति देने लगे थे। उन्होंने बंगाल में आयोजित ‘मन्मथनाथ गुप्त समारोह’ में जहाँ उन्होंने ‘शास्त्रीय नृत्य’ के दिग्गजों के समक्ष अपनी नृत्य कला का प्रदर्शन किया था। जिससे उनकी प्रतिभा की झलक लोगों को दिख गई थी और इसके बाद उन्होंने कभी पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखा।
उन्हें भारत के दूसरे सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान ‘पद्म विभूषण’ (1986) और ‘कालीदास सम्मान’ समेत अनेक पुरस्कारों से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है। उन्हें ‘बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय’ और ‘खैरागढ़ विश्वविद्यालय’ से ‘डॉक्टरेट’ की मानद उपाधि भी मिल चुकी है।
सम्मान और पुरस्कार :-
- 1986 में पदम विभूषण, संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार तथा कालिदास सम्मान प्रमुख है।
- काशी हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय और खैरागढ़ विश्वविद्यालय से डॉक्टरेट की मानद उपाधि मिली।
- 2002 में लता मंगेशकर पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।
- 24 फरवरी, 2000 को उन्हें प्रतिष्ठित संगम कला पुरस्कार पुरस्कृत किया गया।
- 2012 में सर्वश्रेष्ठ नृत्य निर्देशन के लिए राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार फिल्म विश्वरूपम के लिए उन्हें सम्मानित किया गया
- 2016 में हिंदी फिल्म बाजीराव मस्तानी में “मोहे रंग दो लाल” गाने पर नृत्य निर्देशन के लिए फिल्मफेयर पुरस्कार मिला।

बिरजू महाराज का निधन 17 जनवरी 2022 में 83 साल की उम्र में हो गया था. इनकी मृत्यु दिल्ली के साकेत अस्पताल मे हार्ट अटैक से हुआ था।

Pandit Birju Maharaj (Real Name- Brijmohan Nath Mishra) was born on February 4, 1938, in the house of Jagannath Maharaj, a famous Kathak proponent of the Lucknow Gharana. Birju Maharaj was the chief exponent and pioneer of the Acharya Kalka-Bindadin Gharana of the ‘Kathak‘ style of Indian dance. Birju Maharaj learned the basic principles of Kathak from his father Achan Maharaj and has also established ‘Kalashram‘ for Kathak.
The Kathak dance associated with Lord Sri Krishna was inherited by Birju Maharaj. His ancestor Ishwari Prasad Mishra hailed from Handia tehsil of Allahabad and is known as the first known teacher of Kathak. At the age of seven, he started performing in different parts of the country with his father. He performed his dance skills in front of the stalwarts of ‘classical dance’ at the ‘Manmathnath Gupta Ceremony‘ held in Bengal. Due to which the glimpse of his talent was visible to the people and after that he never looked back.
He has been honored with many awards including India’s second highest civilian honor ‘Padma Vibhushan’ (1986) and ‘Kalidas Samman’. He has also received honorary doctorate degrees from ‘Banaras Hindu University’ and ‘Khairgarh University’.
